Sleep & sleep disorders: a practical handbook gives an in-depth overview of the fundamental aspects of sleep and important sleep disorders. It presents the physiology and pathophysiology as well as the clinical approaches and treatments of sleep disorders, paying special attention to paediatric sleep disorders.

This comprehensive basic volume is a practical guide for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders in daily practice. Its contents are enriched by illustrations, flowcharts and a detailed index. This textbook is aimed at professionals in sleep and general medicine, such as physicians, biomedical doctors, laboratory technicians, nurse practitioners and pulmonary function analysts, and will also be of interest to scientists conducting fundamental research, psychologists, students, and others who are interested in studying sleep.

Sleep & sleep disorders combines the knowledge of an international and multidisciplinary team of more than 100 experienced teachers and clinicians working at different academic sleep centres. The book was compiled by Johan Verbraecken, Bertien Buyse, Hans Hamburger, Viviane van Kasteel and Reindert van Steenwijk.

The foreword is by Mary Morrell, professor of Sleep and Respiratory Physiology at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London.

Johan Verbraecken (B), pulmonologist, is medical coordinator of the Multidisciplinary Sleep Disorders Centre UZA (Antwerp University Hospital, Antwerp, Belgium), past-president of the Belgian Association for Sleep research and Sleep medicine (BASS).

Bertien Buyse (B), pulmonologist, heads the multidisciplinary Leuven University Centre for Sleep Monitoring LUCS (University Hospital Gasthuisberg, Leuven, Belgium) and is Board member of the BASS.

Hans Hamburger (NL), neurologist, was former chairman of the Dutch Society for Sleep-Wake Research (NSWO).

Viviane van Kasteel (NL), neurologist, worked at the Sleep centre of the Epilepsy Institute of the Netherlands Foundation (SEIN) in Zwolle (The Netherlands).

Reindert van Steenwijk (NL), pulmonologist, works at Amsterdam UMC, location AMC (The Netherlands) and is former chairman of the Sleep Apnea section (SAS) of the Dutch Society of Physicians for Pulmonary Diseases and Tuberculosis (NVALT).
